Building OpsPilot: Why I Started a DevOps Platform

The motivation, architecture, and engineering goals behind OpsPilot.

OpsPilot started with a simple question: what would happen if I built the operational tooling I kept wishing I had?

As I continued working across backend engineering, DevOps, and cloud-native infrastructure, I found myself repeatedly dealing with the same categories of operational work. Instead of treating those tasks as isolated scripts and commands, I wanted to explore what it would look like to bring them together into a coherent engineering platform.

That idea became OpsPilot.

Why I Built OpsPilot

OpsPilot is an opportunity to deepen my understanding of backend engineering, DevOps, and cloud-native infrastructure by building a practical platform from the ground up.

The goal is not simply to create another CLI tool. The larger objective is to understand how operational software should be structured when it needs to remain maintainable as its capabilities grow.

That means thinking carefully about architecture, command boundaries, configuration, automation, observability, and the developer experience.

Engineering Goals

Several goals shaped the project from the beginning:

  • Build production-quality tooling rather than isolated scripts.
  • Explore practical distributed-systems concepts.
  • Strengthen Go and Python proficiency through real implementation work.
  • Practice clean architecture and separation of concerns.
  • Explore infrastructure automation and cloud-native workflows.
  • Build software that can evolve without becoming unnecessarily complicated.

These goals make OpsPilot as much of an engineering exercise as a product.

Architecture

The project is organized around a modular architecture intended to keep operational concerns separated.

The structure gives individual capabilities a clear place to live while leaving room for the platform to evolve.

The emphasis is on small, understandable components rather than building a large abstraction layer before it is needed.

Current Progress

The project currently includes a modular codebase, a CLI foundation, and an evolving architecture designed for long-term maintainability.

The early implementation is deliberately focused on establishing solid foundations before adding unnecessary complexity.

That approach makes it easier to evaluate each feature on its engineering merits and keep the overall system understandable as development continues.

What I Am Learning

Building operational tooling exposes a different class of engineering problems from building a conventional application.

The software has to interact with systems outside itself. Commands need predictable behavior. Configuration needs to remain manageable. Automation needs to be repeatable. And failures need to be understandable when something goes wrong.

OpsPilot is therefore helping me develop a stronger appreciation for the relationship between application code and the infrastructure on which that code runs.

What’s Next

The next stages of the project include expanding the REST API, improving automation workflows, and integrating Kubernetes-based deployments.

As the platform grows, I also want to keep the architecture intentionally disciplined: every new capability should solve a real problem, have a clear boundary, and earn its place in the system.

OpsPilot is still evolving, but that is part of the point.

The project is a practical environment for learning how to design, build, and operate engineering systems that are useful beyond a single application.
