Overview

ikwukao.dev is a custom engineering portfolio designed to communicate technical work through the same principles used to build software: clarity, structure, performance, and maintainability.

Rather than relying on a generic portfolio template, the site was built as a purpose-driven platform for presenting backend engineering, distributed systems, infrastructure, developer tooling, and technical writing.

The site is intentionally designed around engineering substance rather than visual decoration alone.


Motivation

A technical portfolio has a difficult job.

It needs to communicate what an engineer can build without overwhelming visitors with implementation details, while still providing enough depth for technically experienced readers to understand the work.

The goal of ikwukao.dev was therefore to create a site that works at two levels.

For a recruiter or business visitor, it provides a clear overview of the engineering direction and projects.

For another engineer, it provides enough technical context to understand the systems, decisions, technologies, and lessons behind the work.

Engineering Highlights

  • Built the site’s content architecture around Hugo’s content model rather than hardcoding individual pages.
  • Created reusable partials for headers, footers, project cards, navigation, heroes, and content sections.
  • Organized projects as individual content entries so each project can evolve independently.
  • Used Tailwind CSS to maintain consistent spacing, typography, responsive behavior, and component styling.
  • Implemented production-oriented metadata including canonical URLs, Open Graph information, Twitter metadata, and structured data.
  • Designed the project pages as technical case studies rather than simple project cards.
  • Used Hugo’s production build and minification pipeline to generate a lightweight static site.

Technical Challenges

The biggest challenge was maintaining consistency as the site grew.

A portfolio with many pages can quickly develop inconsistent spacing, typography, navigation patterns, and content structures.

The solution was to treat reusable components and content architecture as first-class engineering concerns.

Another challenge was balancing technical depth with readability. The site needs to be useful to both technical and non-technical visitors, which means the presentation must communicate engineering complexity without becoming unnecessarily dense.

Engineering Lessons

Building the portfolio reinforced several lessons:
