Overview

PokedexCLI is a command-line application written in Go that interacts with the Pokémon API to provide an interactive exploration experience from the terminal.

Although the application is intentionally small, it introduces several concepts that appear repeatedly in larger backend systems: HTTP communication, JSON processing, state management, caching, command dispatch, error handling, and separation of responsibilities.

The project is therefore less about Pokémon itself and more about learning how a backend-oriented Go application communicates with an external service and manages state across user interactions.


Motivation

Building backend software often means communicating with services outside your own application.

That communication introduces practical concerns: network latency, repeated requests, unreliable connections, serialization, API errors, and the need to avoid unnecessary work.

PokedexCLI provided a compact environment for exploring those problems without the complexity of a large production application.

Technical Challenges

The most useful challenge was learning to think about an external API as an unreliable dependency rather than an always-available function call.

Network requests can fail, responses can be malformed, and repeated calls can introduce unnecessary latency.

Caching introduced another important consideration: once data is stored locally, the application must decide when that data can safely be reused.

These concerns provided a small but realistic introduction to backend service design.

Engineering Lessons

Potential improvements include:

  • Persistent disk-backed caching.
  • Improved API error reporting.
  • Configurable cache expiration.
  • Additional API endpoints.
  • Richer Pokémon information.
  • Concurrent API requests where appropriate.
  • Automated integration tests.
  • Improved command discovery and help output.
