Overview

Static Site Generator is a Python-based Markdown-to-HTML publishing system built to explore how a simple content pipeline can transform human-readable documents into structured web pages.

The project takes Markdown content, interprets its structure, converts it into an internal representation, and ultimately renders that representation as HTML.

While the resulting site is intentionally lightweight, the implementation introduces several concepts that are fundamental to compilers, interpreters, document processors, and web frameworks.


Motivation

Static-site generators appear simple from the outside.

A Markdown document goes in and an HTML page comes out.

The interesting engineering work happens in between.

The project was built to understand that transformation instead of hiding it behind an existing framework.

That meant working through parsing, tokenization, tree structures, HTML nodes, block classification, inline formatting, and recursive rendering.

Engineering Highlights

Technical Challenges

Parsing Markdown exposed an important software-engineering lesson: apparently simple syntax quickly becomes complicated when edge cases appear.

For example, a parser must distinguish between structural Markdown and ordinary text while preserving the intended nesting and formatting.

Another challenge was maintaining clean boundaries between parsing and rendering.

If those responsibilities are mixed together, even small changes to the syntax rules can introduce unexpected behavior elsewhere in the generator.
